From Childhood’s Landscape to Poetry’s Breath

Biography

The writer, born in Nîmes on 3 April 1978, currently lives in Tarascon. As daughter of breeders, she grew up between her town and the Little Camargue, a place where Occitan, more particularly Provençal, is a living language still spoken on a daily basis. From her childhood, Provençal is very much present in the world of horses, bulls and the customs of Arles. As a teenager, she deepened her knowledge of the language by reading the great Provençal authors (Mistral, D’Arbaud). At the same time, in high school she learnt classical spelling, which gave her access to the great names in Occitan literature (Max Roquette, Robert Lafont…).

Estelle Ceccarini continued her studies in the Ecole normale supérieur in Fontenay-Saint-Cloud, obtaining a teaching qualification in high schools and a doctorate in romance studies. She currently teaches Italian studies at the University of Aix-Marseille and is qualified in minority languages by the Conseil national des universités. She spends an important part of her research activity studying 20th-century Provençal poetry (Delavouët, D’Arbaud, Dibon).
Co-founder with Paul Martin in 2019 of the Rencontres de Salinelles, dedicated to literary creation in Occitan, she continues her literary work by publishing several collections of poems. In 2023, she received the prestigious Prix Mistral for all her work.

Motivation Prize

Reed, saladella or salicornia? It doesn’t matter: like these emblematic plants, Estelle carries the Camargue within it. Estelle is the Camargue. She has plants’ roots and flavour, and if their richness is the double influence of water and salt, Estelle’s writing is also rich in a double influence: Mistral and D’Arbaud.

We cannot evoke these plants, this landscape, this country, without mentioning two other equally characteristic elements of Provence and Camargue: the wind, the mistral, and the sun, with its very special light. But Estelle also has horse, dau chivau, another Camargue emblem: she possesses its eagerness and strength, as well as its freedom. All this she weaves with her sensitivity in continuing her work as a teacher and poet.
For her embodying this light in the vast Camarguean expanses and knowing how to bestow upon them the magic of encounters, bringing within herself the richness of neighbouring and friendly languages; because, whatever language she writes in, she knows how to open our minds and to allow the magic of created words to work, presenting and rewarding Estelle Ceccarini makes full sense and reinforces the links between the mountainous borders and the Provencal soul.
